The Browns Valley Historical Society holds the log cabin home of former resident and city founders, Samuel J. Brown and his father, Major Joseph R. Brown, located on a strip of land between the source of the Red River and the Minnesota River.
-
Sam Brown’s Cabin was built in 1861 near Fort Sisseton as the Fort Wadsworth Agency and Scout Headquarters Building. It served in a military capacity from 1861-1866. The cabin was purchased by Joseph R Brown in 1866 and moved to Browns Valley. It served as the Brown residence and was also a post office and trading post.
-
The first floor of the cabin is filled with Brown family memorabilia, while the second is a re-creation of a portion of the Brown family home.
-
Sam Brown’s Cabin is currently a museum with many, many photos, pictures, artifacts, and historical information. The upstairs is a replica of the Sam Brown home from the early 1800’s.
-
Also included within the Browns Valley Historical Society is an old schoolhouse, which holds items that would be seen in the late 1800s to early 1900s, the Carnegie Library, containing past photographs and artifacts from the town’s past, including a wall dedicated to its past high school and a scale from a past grocery store, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
